This latest calendar features a number of paintings from recent trips and memories throughout the years. Last year I headed once again to the Outer Hebrides, this time with a group of friends. The scenic ferry journey from Ullapool to Stornoway did not disappoint with its panoramic views.

 

I just love being on deck and letting the wind blow through my hair. Our first beach on Lewis was the stunning Tolsta, so vast with unspoilt velvet sand. On the west coast we visited the historic Black Houses, the Callanish Stones and Great Bernera with its beautiful Bosta beach before reaching Tarbert on Harris. Although the following day was a little wet, the Golden road down the east coast to Rodel and Levenburgh still held its beauty with its rich golden seaweed surrounding the coastline. Returning up the west coast we spent time exploring the gorgeous beaches of Scarista, Hogarbost, Seilebost and Luskentyre taking in the white pristine beaches with crystal clear waters before popping across the bridge to explore Scalpay.

 

Our early morning ferry to Berneray and North Uist was smooth and tranquil and we spent time on the striking East Beach, West Beach and Clachan Sands, again so vast, unspoilt and deserted. Just sheer beauty! Weather breaking completely we motored through South Uist and spent a lovely evening on Eriskay with a soft sunset and the views across to Barra. Lovely to see a few roaming ponies. In my view the outer Hebrides are a Tropical Paradise.

I have always had a close connection with nature and I am also inspired by my surroundings in the Scottish Borders. My affinity and passion for the Scottish coastline and in particular the west coast comes from memorable family holidays. Being out in the open, standing between real time and space allows me to watch the slow changes in light and mood. I aim to capture the bold vibrant colours, the soft light and sometimes windswept coastlines whilst at the same time excite and produce a painting you can get lost in.
